Postdoctoral Opportunity in Aerosol and Cloud Modeling
Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) on Long Island, NY seeks a postdoctoral research associate who will participate with a group of researchers to improve aerosol and cloud representations in regional- and global-scale climate models.
Aerosol research will focus on the incorporation of a quadrature method of moments (QMOM) scheme into climate models (GISS, CAM), and cloud research will assess and improve cloud simulations in regional climate models (WRF).
• For the aerosol research, the successful candidate would first learn the QMOM and see how it is applied in the GISS model at BNL and then work closely with PNNL scientists (under direction of Steve Ghan) during several visits to that laboratory (perhaps for a total of 1 month or so) to apply the QMOM to CAM.
• For the cloud research, the successful candidate will use observations from novel radar and satellite-based observations, developed by group members, to assess and improve WRF tropical convective simulations and the aerosol transport.
Scientific interactions may also include those with investigators associated with NY Blue Climate Science, which is a collaborative effort led by scientists at BNL Atmospheric Sciences Division and the Stony Brook University (SBU) Institute for Terrestrial and Planetary Atmospheres to use the New York Blue supercomputer to address challenges in understanding the chemical, atmospheric and oceanic processes that effect weather and climate (https://wiki.bnl.gov/bg_climate_science/index.php/Main_Page). NY Blue is a 100-teraflop IBM Blue Gene/L massively parallel supercomputer that is jointly operated by BNL and SBU and is currently ranked the 17th fastest supercomputer in the world.
