FAQ for NCAR Participants

Questions Regarding Budget Preparation

1. What items can I request funding for in my FFP application?

You may be eligible for the following items:

  • Travel
  • Per Diem
  • Shipping Allowance

Travel: You may request funds to pay for your travel to and from the university as long as it conforms to our travel policies and procedures. You may wish to work with staff from the Advanced Study Program, or in your division, to work up accurate travel estimates. You will be reimbursed based on actual receipts for airfare. If you choose to drive, you will be reimbursed on actual mileage up to $750.00.

Salary and Benefits: Salary and benefit support must be borne by your NCAR division or institute.

Temporary Living Per Diem: Temporary living per diem can be requested to augment the costs associated with your visit. FFP awards up to $2000/month based on actual lodging costs. No additional per diem will be provided.

Shipping: For visits of 6 months or more, you may request up to a $750 shipping allowance.

2. Do I need to follow a specific format for my budget submission?

Yes. Please view and download our suggested form here as either a PDF file or an excel file. We have also included a sample budget to help you with this process.

3. Should my division continue paying for some or all of the above expenses?

Generally, any co-sponsorship that your division provides will be beneficial to the Faculty Fellowship Program as a whole and will allow more FFP proposals to be funded.

4. How does the lodging reimbursement work?

Your visit will be subject to all the usual NCAR travel rules and regulations. Our expectation is that you will secure short term lodging at the location you are visiting while keeping your current residence in the Boulder area. ASP will reimburse you the cost of your rental based on actual receipts and up to $2000/month. There are income tax implications with regard to this reimbursement. If the residence at the new location is not a duplicate residence, the reimbursement could be subject to income tax.

5. Is there someone at NCAR with whom I can work to develop my budget?

Certainly. Please contact the Advanced Study Program Division Administrator, Paula Fisher, to help you with your budget.
