Information for viewing ASP seminars and colloquium presentations using Web browsers:

To view and listen to these presentations, you need a sound card, an internet connection at 28.8 Kbaud or faster, and the (free) software you can download by following this link:

Be sure to search the page for the free player; you won't have to have the one that you must pay for.

Some viewing hints:

  • On some systems and with some video cards, a full-screen mode is available.  Try right-clicking on a blank part of the screen while the presentation is playing and then select the "ZOOM" and "full-screen" options if they appear.  This is especially useful if the presentation is to be projected for display in a room.
  • The presentations are designed to be displayed by a plug-in in a Netscape window.  If you have difficulty with this (as may occur with some Linux systems because the available Linux plug-ins are not up-to-date), try selecting the address directly after running the RealPlayer.
  • The audio-video files have locator addresses like "http://real.ucar.edu/ramgen/asp/colloquium_1999/day3-2.rm" where this example refers to the second talk on day 3 of the colloquium.
  • You can use the search bar to skip around in the talks, but if your connection is via modem this may produce awkwardly long delays while the program refills buffers.  On some systems, a brief click on the reverse arrow speeds the resumption of the talk; on others (notably some Linux systems) the picture may not return in any reasonable time after such spacing.  Spacing works well on most Windows systems with high-speed internet connections.
